As you’re probably aware, many companies across the United Kingdom have created “recommend-a-friend” programs in order to encourage their existing customers to refer new customers in turn. These include the banks, credit card companies and energy companies amongst many others. When you share your customer referral link with a new person, you, and the person you recommended, attract a “double-sided” cashback commission. Meaning both you and they receive a word-of-mouth commission when they become a customer also. Your customers in turn may now share their own customer referral link with new people and spread the word in the same fashion through, in principle, an unlimited number of referrals.
By way of example, let’s imagine you are an Octopus Energy customer, and you share your Octopus Energy affiliate link with a personally sponsored Team Partner. When they follow your link and become a customer also, Octopus will assign a £50 word-of-mouth bonus to both your account and their new account (£50 each in free energy essentially) as a thank you for winning a new customer. Our point being, in this simple example, in return for attracting a new customer, together you’ve managed to extract £100 in free energy from the bank vault of an energy companies’ affiliate program – energy that you would both otherwise have to have paid cash for of course and the economy of our community has effectively risen by £100.
